Surf Songs (And Snacks) – Driving and Dining

We are just over one week into summer. I don’t know if it’s the summer vibe or the fact that my husband just spent a few days in Los Angeles, but this morning when I woke up I had sun tans, surfing and Santa Cruz on my mind. .I also had Free Kitten’s Surf’s Up on my computer this morning, so I’ll take that as a sign that today’s Driving and Dining article just has to be about California and surfing. And (because this is driving and dining) snacking at concession stands, of course.

Santa Cruz Surfing Museum

The Santa Cruz Surfing Museum chronicles over 100 years of Santa Cruz surfing history. And, as if a surfing museum isn’t cool enough already – it’s in an old lighthouse that overlooks Steamer Lane (a well known surf spot).

The International Surfing Museum is in Huntington Beach – surf music fans can check out Dick Dale’s vintage 1954 California Electric guitar there, as well as surf memorabilia and vintage skateboards. Dick Dale is known for his crazy fast guitar playing and sweet surf riffs.

And here is a lighter version of the same song for comparison from the mainstream’s version of Wanda Jackson.

Surf City, USA

Huntington Beach is also known as Surf City USA. According to their website, surfing in Huntington Beach is “a time-honored tradition that’s been passed down generation to generation ever since Duke Kahanamoku —the Father of Surfing — first surfed the HB Pier in the early twentieth century.”

Dwight’s Beach Concession

concession stand hamburger

This concession is the oldest business in Huntington Beach. Located right on the Pacific Coast Highway, Dwight’s has been serving up hamburgers, ice cream and more since 1932. I wonder if Jack Kerouac ever made a roadside stop there when he was on the road to Big Sur? It’s possible.

Zacks Surf Shop

Zack’s Surf Shop is the closest concession food stand to the Huntington Pier. You can pick up a burrito, fried shrimp, or some chili cheese fries there (among many other selections) and get surf lessons or rent a beach cruiser all at one spot.
