Happy Frozen Dead Guy Day!
Nederland, Colorado
If you’re in Colorado in early March, you should stop by Nederland. It’s about half an hour away from Boulder and between March 5 – 7 they are celebrating “Frozen Dead Guy Days”.
Frozen Dead Guy Days is a festival held in honor of Grandpa Bredo – a dead man who has been frozen in a local shed for the last twenty years. According to the local Chamber of Commerce, residents will celebrate with a “parade of hearses, ice carving demonstration, …coffin races, frozen Salmon tossing, icy turkey bowling and Sunday Local Funday with great kid activities.” Because nothing spells fun the kids like a frozen dead guy in a shed…
For Cryogening Out Loud
The star of the festival is Grandpa Bredo Morstel who was originally frozen in liquid nitrogen in California, but moved to Colorado when his relatives decided to keep him on ice DIY style. Unfortunately, they were deported back to Norway. The nice people of Nederland have taken over and help Grandpa Bredo keep his cool by packing 1600 pounds of dry ice around him every month. They also celebrate with him every year during Frozen Dead Guy days.
You can read all about the ‘cool’ (ha ha) events and the complete history at the Nederland area Chamber of Commerce website. This year is the 20th anniversary of the Grandpa Bredo’s passing.

If you’re in the area, there is also a ski hill less than a mile a way at Eldora Mountain Resort.
You can also go cross country skiing or snow shoeing through a ghost town (Caribou, pictured below).
Not getting to the area until it’s warmer outside?
No problem! They have a musical festival during the Summer called Nedfest.
