Hamburger History

Concession Obsession

May is National Hamburger Month – the perfect time to feature what is, in my opinion, one of the best foods to buy from a concession stand!

According to whatscookingamerica.net, the hamburger patty dates back to the time of Genghis Khan. Apparently ground meat that could be eaten with one hand was the food of choice for sword-swiping warriors on horseback.

Slight difference between the Genghis Burger and the cheeseburger you pick up at the burger joint near your house? They ate them raw.

The good people of Hamburg (Germany) picked up on the recipe in the 1600′s. Enterprising New Yorkers sold cooked meat patties to German sailors at concession stands along the city harbor at the end of the 18th century (whatscookingamerica.net).

Celebrate Hamburger Month Every Day in May

Extremely dedicated fans of the hamburger can commit to eating one every day in May. Not that crazy? You should still check out the 31 different hamburger recipes at wodsradio.com. Or, you can celebrate by dressing up in honor of this special time of the year…

Note that the above dress is a one-of-a-kind creation, commissioned from artist Joy Kampia (check out her website, she’s amazing). Perhaps you could order one with different toppings instead: maybe a mushroom swiss dress or a bacon cheddar burger? A great way to have everyone drooling over you when you go out!

Meatless Hamburgers

Are you a vegetarian? If so, don’t worry, there are now lots of non-meat hamburgers available for you.

Like this gummy hamburger candy from thechocolatestore.com.

Or these cupcakes created by Lisa Smiley (check out her blog if you have a sweet tooth – her creations are charming, and I bet they are delicious too!).

Now several people who claim to be the descendants of the hamburger’s inventor dispute what happened next. The story used to be that the first hamburger was served up at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. This sandwich was made with a cooked patty of ground beef on a hard roll. Of course there are earlier references to hamburgers, but this might be where it hit the big time. Where the first burger was made, however, is the source of many arguments

There are lots of stories of the hamburger, to many that we do not know which is true. Now several people who claim to be the maker of the hamburgers. One story was that the first hamburger was served up at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. While others say the hamburger as such was invented in Hamburg, Germany but at the time, consisted of a piece of roast pork on a roll. Later German immigrants brought this idea to America.
The hamburger was made with a cooked patty of ground beef on a hard roll. Of course there are earlier references to hamburgers, but this might be where it hit the big time. Where the first burger was made, however, is the source of many arguments. Hamburgers are sandwiches made of a ground beef patty put inside a two slices of buns. They often have lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, cheese also mustard, mayonnaise, ketchup and relish. Some of the restaurant’s burgers have things unheard of like niacin, folic acid, and riboflavin. They even put like copper, zinc, and potassium in it. It doesn’t sound like something that people might not want to eat.
